Modularized Power-Electronic Buck Converter Based High-Power Impulse Current Test Bench – Comparative Analysis of Simulation and Experiment

This paper presents an innovative test circuit for the investigation and testing of MVDC circuit breakers. The design is based on a modularized power-electronic buck converter. The developed demonstrator test circuit enables the generation of realistic DC fault currents of up to 30 kA at 8 kV source voltage, which are required for a holistic testing. Focus of the paper is the validation of the test circuit’s digital twin by analysis of different operation modes.
Furtheremore, the interconnection of several high-power buck converter modules is discussed.
